I'm Kim Alexander and this is a Fiction Nation minute. This debut novel is set in the desert southwest, but its heart is clearly with south Florida mystery writers like Carl Hiaasen and James Hall. If you're going to go for a style, that's a fine one to pick. You've got your psychotic villains — in this case the truly scary Wyatt, father of sweet young bank robber Tara, and author of the 47 rules. Tara runs into Max, the bored son of the sheriff in small town Arizona, and he's hooked. But Wyatt isn't interested in making rule 48 to allow for boyfriends. In 47 Rules of Highly Effective Bank Robbers, the bodies pile up as the robberies start to go wrong and Wyatt gets more nuts — the lighthearted tone I felt was a little forced considering the bloodshed, but the author does a good job with his large cast of oddball characters. It's a crime novel, and in fact it's pretty bloody considering the deadpan comedic tone. The rules were laid down by homicidal bank robber and loving father Wyatt, and they've kept him alive, along with his sweet daughter Tara, who loves robbing banks almost as much as her new boyfriend, the sheriffs son Max. Wyatt unfortunately isn't so happy about his daughter's choice of mates, and he's not a talk things out kind of guy. In 47 Rules of Highly Effective Bank Robbers, there are ex-partners trying double crosses, FBI agents, native American guides, all trying to either kill each other or find some missing money, or both, and the author keeps his various plot lines and many characters hopping until they all come together in the deserts of Arizona, neatly mixing up the humor along with the carnage. 47 Rules of Highly Effective Bank Robbers by Troy Cook. They get more complicated when Max decides robbing banks with Tara beats the heck out of living in small town Arizona. Tara's dad, the violent lunatic, and Max's dad, the self help book obsessed sheriff, are as you can imagine neither one of them too excited about their children's choices. In 47 Rules of Highly Effective Bank Robbers, bullets and bodies fly, and the cast of oddball characters keeps the action moving .
